Messing about with maps

Collage obsession maps

The Collage obsessions challenge this week is 'maps'. Rather than complete a finished canvas I have been experimenting in my sketch book.

I tore up pieces of map relating to the Scottish Highlands, and stuck them into my sketch book. Then I put layers of colour onto the page, purples greens and browns.

Then once dry I cut the sketchbook page into squares and pasted them in a grid pattern and added gesso. I like the way maps seem to have thread like qualities with the red A roads wriggling through the patchwork landscape. I used red ink to go over the roads and then used red silk thread to form a grid around my map shapes.

  1. Your piece is so original and creative!I love how you've altered the maps but kept them still visible. Thanks for participating in Collage Obsession this week!

  3. Thanks :) I would have loved to machine embroider the red thread onto the backing paper and round the squares, but as I had applied gesso it was a little to stiff. Never mind thats what experimenting is for, to learn what to do next time :)

  4. This is inspired and beautiful. I like the way you have inked in the red roads, many of them must be personal memories as you work or look back at the finished piece.
I was given a book for Christmas called "YOU ARE HERE - Personal geographies and other maps of the imagination" by Katherine Harmon. Very US oriented, but interesting as I love maps, plus the art involved. And your collage is a Personal Geography. Love it.

  5. Thanks Jez :) Yes lots of memories as I was inking in the roads, and although I used colour to cover some of the pieces I left the names of memorable place names, so it is a sort of memory map.

  9. This is a very lovely idea "messing about with maps" especially the read thread you have added. I found a personal message for me as well in your artwork, since maps and red threads are so important in my life but sometimes I loose either the map or the red thread and have to search for it :)

  10. Brilliant! I love it. I unwrapped my machine yesterday to find that it doesn't work so I'll be doing a lot of art journaling!
