graphite, watercolour on paper |
Today, two faces ( I am having a break tomorrow )
It is a year now since I wisited Florence and I was looking back at some of my photographs. This painting is inspired by a beautiful fountain in the Boboli gardens of the Pitti palace. I am not sure who the figures made of marble are, the gardens were filled with so many beautiful sculptures I didn't note down all the information, but they look rather sad and wistful.
The original sculpture |
I sketched in pencil first and then added a watercolour wash.

I used to paint in watercolour often, I had forgotten how much I love it!
For those who missed my faces this week here is a brief catch up
Linking up to the 29 faces and paint party Friday
These are lovely and you've really captured that wistful look on their faces.
ReplyDeleteI missed your other faces this week-i love the owl!
This is such a sweet couple. I like where you got your idea!
ReplyDeleteLove your watercolor rendition of the couple. They are Adam and Eve (fig's leaves!), while the crawling figure at their feet is the Devil (face of an angel, tail of a serpent...;)). Travel is such an endless source of inspiration.Did you enjoy Italy? Isn't Florence just magical! :)
ReplyDeleteAdam and Eve of course!!!! ;) Thank you!
DeleteLovely faces Morag, your trip to Florence must have been special, Italy is such a beautiful place. My favorite though is that special owl, I just keep going back to gaze at him.

so beautiful, and how could one not be inspired by such a beautiful city too. Love all your faces!
ReplyDeletelove the softness of your work this week!!!! Happy PPF and I wish you a wonderful weekend!!!!
ReplyDeleteWhen I looked at your painting I felt the 'classical' touch, and a sculptural effect, so I was pleased to read that it was inspired by your visit to Florence. I love the delicate touch and it is clear they are rather sad, perhaps star-crossed lovers.
ReplyDeleteThe painting of the sculpture is so beautiful. I thought I might have a photo of it in a book we got in Florence, but alas, it is not included.
ReplyDeleteWonderful sketch and so nice to hear the story behind it.
ReplyDeleteHappy PPF
Enjoying all your faces, each one wih a character of its own. The owl is intriguing!
ReplyDeleteWonderful! It really had that greco-roman look to it - fascinating to see a sculpture inspiring a watercolour!
ReplyDeleteWonderful to draw of the statues. They look a bit sad.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful work, love the statues and the owl is gorgeous.

You transformed the cold hard marble to a warm, soft painting. Love your watercolor. Was your owl also a watercolor? We have two owls who talk to each other in the early mornings, right here in the suburbs. I love them! Of course, I am up and reading art blogs :)
ReplyDeleteWow this is wonderful Morag another beautiful side of your terrific art! Such a lovely variety of faces too!! Thanks for sharing!
