It is good to start the New year with a bit of a challenge..
A little while back a good friend of mine Swirlygirl was doing a little de-cluttering and gave me this very large unfinished canvas. She was determined she was not going to finish it and wanted me to do something with it. She is a lover of Flora Bowley and her 'Brave intuitive' art style.
I love intuitive art but it is something which I do not normally do in my collage.
I usually have some idea before I start of where I want to be.
Yes, things may change and plans fall by the wayside.
Colours may not work together, collaged shapes can be altered, but ultimately intuitive collage is something new for me. Starting with someone else's work is a challenge in itself. I didn't want to change it, but yet I wanted it to be 'me'
Hmmmm... a bit of splattered Gesso and marking tape still didn't do it.
Drastic action required.
Sorry swirlygirl... black and white gesso...
Some people see faces in these types of intuative paintings which they bring out (Check out Denthe and her fabulous blog) I see landscapes..... I think!
Those little red dots look like trees winding over the hillside
Intuitive collage can get messy, good use for all that discarded Christmas wrap though!
Not finished yet... still squirrelling away, adding some fabric paper elements....
When will it be finished? I guess its all down to intuition. ;)
Happy New year to all my lovely Blog friends may your new year be filled with love and light.

Ha, I see what you mean - brave is obviously the word for us this year! I love what you've done here. I love Denthe's work and her beautiful colourful intuitive paintings and it was through her I learnt about Flora Bowley although I'm like you in that I know before I start what I intend to paint although the final piece usually is vastly different than how it started but that's all part of the process that I love. I love what Swirlygirl gave you and it must've been difficult to cover that over. I also love it at the stage where there is a lot of black with stripes of colorful landscape - It'll be interesting to see where your intuition takes you on this piece but I'm sure it will end up being a typically colourful and beautiful Paper Rainbow collage.
ReplyDeleteDear Morag, I love how you see landscapes in your intuitive pieces. I think what you have done so far looks fabulous and thank you for the introduction to another great artist!
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year!!!
This is looking great Morag. Looking forward to seeing it finished. Happy New Year to you !!
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year, Morag! It is always a pleasure to see the colorful artwork of yours and get inspiration, I hope the new year will bring lots of ideas for art to all of us! Cheers!
ReplyDeleteOh, it looks great so far! I look forward to seeing it finished!
ReplyDeleteLooks good, have fun with it. I have a whole stash of wrapping papers which I will be using up over the next weeks! Happy New Year, Valerie
ReplyDeleteFantastic!
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year!
Happy New Year to you! I LOVE your collage. When you added the black I didn't think it would work but it all came together perfectly. Can't wait to see the finished piece!
ReplyDeleteReally wonderful! yes, I think intuitive is not how I think of myself either, but it is true the plan usually changes along the way, so maybe we are wrong about ourselves? I love what you have done. The stags are wonderful, too. I love Denthe's work, too and will check out Flora Bowley.
ReplyDeleteIt's looking fabulous so far! Hope to see the finished version! :) Happy new year!
ReplyDeleteI loved seeing all the steps you've done. It looks like so much fun, Morag.
ReplyDeleteYou truly do paint with paper! A talent to be admired.
ReplyDeleteI love where swirlygirl's painting led you... Such a great combination of paint & collage (I can't wait to see what happens next)!

I love Flora's style and approach but it is not something I have tried. Like you, I usually have something specific in mind when I begin. I love how you have already made this painting "yours". Happy New year and happy PPF!
ReplyDeleteMorag this is so great, such texture, colours and patterns, it delights me! I love how you shared your journey with us, your art is so cheery and full of positive vibes! Happy New Year to you too! xx
ReplyDeleteBeautiful process pictures! The white gesso stage reminds me of Friedensreich Hundertwasser, an Austrian artist.
ReplyDeleteI love your art and I'm sure this will turn into something wonderful :-)
Happy New Year!
love the landscapes..happy new year
ReplyDeleteIt's so hard to follow intuition and yet it leads you down a beautiful colorful and changeable road. Thanks for sharing your process. Looking forward to seeing the finished version -- though some artists work on a piece for year before they feel they are finished. :) Have a creative new year!
ReplyDeleteGreat to see your processes. I saw landscapes too! I find intuition difficult, I think brave is the right word! Cant wait to see what you do with the stitched fabric paper, it looks awesome. Happy New Year.
ReplyDeleteWell this is certainly a process in "letting go" for me, that is what Flora taught me, to let go of the outcome and just go intuitively with what colours you want to paint and be playful and bold with mark making etc.. When I looked at your first picture, I could see an aquactic theme emerging - something I didn't see before. It looks very different now you have taken it and transformed it with your own style and yet I can see some of the original paint and design - it's a collaborative piece! Very pleased you have brought it back to life x
ReplyDeleteWow, very brave! You completely made it your own. I love seeing the different stages it went through, and thanks for the tip about the Christmas-wrappingpaper. I read about it in your year review, and yes, this year I did save the paper ;-) Now I just need to figure out how to use it intuitively ....
ReplyDeleteThis looks fabulous so far, the colours are so vibrant no eye catching! Happy New Year, Morag! May your rainbows always be radiant!
ReplyDeleteI love your two stags - marvelous! Happy New Year :)
ReplyDeleteWow Impressive process, I loved the commentary along the way. I think you are are an artist who is so true to yourself! I love how you are revamping that canvas. I too love Flora Bowleys intuitive style! I love to pick images from the paint... but either way, whether you pick colours or placement there really is an intuitive process in play in all creativity! Thanks for always being interesting!! Gorgeous work!

Happy New Year to you. Your process intrigues and inspires me. I took Flora's workshop in person a few years ago. I love her process and her sweet presence. I had the hardest time finishing what I started but finally after layers and layers finished one last year and sold it. It was like raising a child. The process is intuitive and some of the time you are winging it. xo
ReplyDeleteThis is so interesting and would look great on the wall! Very eye-catching, I imagine everyone would see something different in it :)
ReplyDeleteit is interesting how art is not completed until it is completed.
ReplyDeletelooks wonderful.
wishing you a wonderful 2015 as well!
Swirlygirl shouldn't be too faised by this. ;) I took the Flora Bowley class back in October and in one of the lessons we had to put a layer of big black and white marks on our colourful canvas. It turned out to be one of the best techniques I learned on the course.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fantastic start to the new year Morag, I love what you've done!
