Fairy Godmother

Birthdays

The APR challenge this week is birthdays, and at first I was a little stumped! Should I paint a birthday cake?
Should I paint a bunch of balloons?
Birthdays are really all about wishes,
Wishing to be younger,
Wishing to be older,
Wishing for a happy year.

When my children were small they always had birthday parties at home. I love baking and it was a great excuse to make loads of tasty cakes and biscuits; It didn't matter that the house was trashed by hoards of rampaging five year olds, it was fun! My youngest daughter loved dressing up, especially as a princess and one year we had a Cinderella party and  I made a Pink castle cake complete with turrets; She still talks about the day over fifteen years later so it must have made an impact!
That memory gave me the idea for the wish fairy.

So here is my Fairy Godmother, when you blow out the candles she makes birthday wishes come true!

It is a mixed media piece done on heavy weight watercolour paper. Using collage ,Gesso and Caran Dache Neocolor crayons.

I started with a background of old encyclopedia pages and Gelli printed paper.
Added some Gesso...

Added some line and colour. I like to blend the crayons with baby wipes rather than water.

I like her raised eyebrow, it is like she is slightly surprised by the wish request!

This is pink castle cake number two made ( At her own request) for my daughters eighteenth birthday a couple of years ago, not as good as the original, but it tasted nicer :)

Links this week to Artists Playroom   Where it is Jenns Birthday , Happy Birthday Jenn!

and the most fabulous Paint party friday!!!

  8. Visiting from the APR - Your Wish Fairy is so sweet, she has such a kind face, (as all good fairies should), and I hope she will work along with the candle on the cake I created for Jenn too :0) Mo

  9. She is so sweet - and you're right, it's like she's just heard your wish and is thinking that perhaps you should re-think it!

  10. Ha! I remember all those parties when mine were young. It's a miracle that I remember anything because I was always soooo tired!!! I worked WAY TOO hard at making everything wonderful for my kids when they were young. Many special cakes, but the one that stands out is the pirate ship that I made for my son's pirate birthday. It was complete with a few hard to find pirate from the Fisher Price series. He helped me make the cake and I then had to sneak the pirates in right before the party. Dad dressed up as Captain Hook and my son actually took off out of the room in fright not realizing it was just his dad. LOL

Loved this post. Fun. the fairy godmother is delightful. Love how her eyes seemed to be looking up in the earlier pics, but ended up looking down to the side in the end. Interesting...

  15. What a brilliant entry...everyone should have a fairy godmother. She looks so kind that she'd grant everyone's wish.
I've done my fair share of themed parties over the years. So much hard work at the time but well worth it for all the memories.
That is a gorgeous cake...perhaps almost too pretty to eat! ;D

  26. What a nice birthday present! I love your cake also. I did the same for my children when they were young. I had a castle cake for my son( the towers tipped a little!) and a Barbie cake for my daughter. I put a Barbie inside a bunt cake and decorated her very bouffant skirt! Thank you for showing the steps!

  30. Oh what a sweet fairy godmother and magical castle cake you made. You are one very special mom!!!

Thanks for showing the steps to the mixed media collage. I am presently working on one and posted it (WIP) for PPF this week....pondering on what techniques to use on it.

I can see why she has it instilled in he memory, just precious and those candles, pure magic touch! I have the same candles and this is probably the best way I've seen them used.

    Thanks for sharing,
