Island hideaways; papercloth sewing

I have been working on more little Island hideaways pieces, sewn and embroidered on papercloth.
You may remember I did a series of 'wee houses' collaged onto small wooden panels a little while back.

wee houses series
well I loved the idea of working on a new 'wee house' series but instead of just collaging with paper and paint I wanted to use stitch and papercloth. Often ideas grow from ideas!

I painted the houses onto some collaged papercloth ( muslin covered in torn paper fragments)
Then I machine stitched the paper cloth with silk and metalic thread.

I also used some iridescent spray inks  stencilled onto areas of the papercloth.

I think you can just about make out the stencilled circles.

To photograph I spread out all three pieces together on a picnic blanket....

somebody decided the blanket was a good place to sleep......

not impressed when asked to get off!

  3. I have struggled in the past with how to mount and frame textile pieces but these are finished off beautifully. I wonder if you intend to put them in a frame or hang them as they are.
I love them all but the one on the top right caught my eye in particular. I think it is the colour.

  4. These are so charming Morag and I enjoyed clicking on every image to see all the wonderful details. The stitching makes it so interesting and the vertical stitches in the foreground read as blades of grass or foliage. Wonderful! I loved looking back at your little house post too and I've learned a new word today...croft. Your sweet houses are just so enchanting. These are gems!

  8. What a delightful collection, you create such wonderful little worlds - I am yearning to live in one of those little cottages and meander through the textures and embroidery - imagine if there really were fields of embroidery in real life - how heavenly!

  13. Love these Morag, particularly the bottom piece with the buttons on which really adds interest, I was almost expecting to see a little farm cat curled up somewhere amongst the grass/flowers but instead the cat was enjoying the softness of your picnic blanket! With so many bloggers enjoying your work, seems a great opportunity to sell direct via Etsy ;o)

  19. Morag these are exquisite! Rich with wild beauty, you definitely have a way at making the landscape come alive! I love these wee Scottish houses, I can picture them so well somewhere isolated in the highlands or just in the middle of nowhere in Scotland! Cats always find the perfect sleeping spot, I wouldn't mind lying down and relaxing on that warm blanket too!
