Summer seas

After weeks of appearing to have not much to show, at last a new canvas!
I have actually been working very hard and have made several new pieces, but for the moment they are under wraps and I'm only letting one free at the moment.
The summer seas canvas was inspired by a little boat trip I had in August into Portree bay.
I took the photo below because it made me smile.
I did not go for a boat trip in this particular rowing boat! The real Brigadoon is a little larger and more seaworthy, thank goodness.

August was a dreadful, wet month, but this particular day was beautiful!

A large pod of dolphins swam alongside the boat, it was magical...my camera ran out of charge after this shot....not so magical!

Well my seagull canvas began with a boat in the foreground but I really didn't like it, the seagull to me needed to be the main focus. All the heavy shapes of the boats just seemed to battle against what I wanted.

I then remembered the little sail boat I had seen at sea on my boat trip.

So out went the big boat and in came the small distant sail....

I am much happier with it now, my seagull has space to fly.

  1. Absolutely stunning!! There have been so many pods of dolphins and many whale sighting this year in our coastal waters too!! Pods circling kayaks and other boats... I guess with all the media we are able to share in these delights!! I can imagine it was quite magical!! Obviously inspiring by you gorgeous art work!! Thanks for sharing... the seagull seems to be soaring with contentment! I imagine this piece fetching a hefty price with the colours and beautiful subject matter!!

  2. That's interesting! The painting I'm working on at the moment had a big red and orange boat in the foreground and I loved it so much I didn't want to change it but finally I did find myself painting over it! It's still early days for mine but I hope it turns out half as stunning as yours! It's scary making these decisions isn't it? Scary but thrilling when it works! xx

  7. So stunning and I love the seagull taking centre stage - beautifully calm and gentle. Your boat trip sounds magical, and how lucky to have the dolphins swimming alongside your boat, an amazing experience.

  8. Oh yes I see how the finished piece is full of space and air, I can feel that sea gull's flight. The colours are soft and draw me in, so dreamy and with a misty sea atmosphere. Gazing at this misty piece the scent of the ocean comes to mind, that's what's so magical with this, I don't just see this painting but feel it, a truly beautiful piece!

  9. This is gorgeous Morag and I love the story of how it was inspired. How gutting that your camera ran out of battery just as the dolphins appeared but at least you got to enjoy them right there and then instead of worrying about getting the perfect shot which I think we're all too guilty of nowadays. Funny, I'm working on both a boat and a seagull in two different paintings right now as well - this piece is so beautifully atmospheric.

  17. You're right, it looks so much better this way! Although I really like the colours of the boat in the first version, it did take the attention away from the seagull. And those dolphins ..... amazing. Such gentle creatures, I love them!
