A moonlight Adventure

I have been making lots of moonlight pieces recently.
This one is on a large MDF panel. It gives a lovely firm surface  to collage onto. I am often asked how I combine the paper and paint layers so here is a little WIP photo, although I'm not sure it makes it any clearer. I tend to work quite organically, often only having a vague idea of where I am going. Pieces introduce themselves slowly.

Sometimes not knowing exactly where the adventure will take you is a little scary, however as the great explorer Christopher Columbus said,
'you can't cross the ocean without losing sight of the land'.

  1. What a stunning piece of work - I adore the vivid red of the poppies,. I've been doing some pieces on my garden at night time and I've loved working with the darker colours - it gives work a whole different dimension doesn't it. I love the vivid colours you've used against the dark blues and black - this piece is spine-tinglingly gorgeous.

  3. Well, you know I'm a fan of starry skies in my art so I love these night time pieces! I agree it's exciting to see where a piece will take you. I always have an idea in my head but it rarely translates exactly the same on to canvas as idea change as you go and often the art itself decided its own direction!

    1. Thanks Jennifer Rose I use a pva based glue called modpodge it is artists quality which means it doesn't yellow over time as normal pva would. I also use acrylic medium as a glue especially on thin papers.

  6. This is so beautiful Morag. I love the vivid colours against the dark sky. Is your mdf board an artist's board or did you prepare it yourself from a piece from the DIY? If so I would love to knowd how you prepare it for working on.

  10. This is truly beautiful. I love all the colours and patterns in your starting collage, there is so much depth, and then how you turn it into a painting with the quiet house, the dark sea and sky is so skilful.

  16. Ooh, I love these colours. My favorite kind of blue .... It looks like a big piece of MDF. Doesn't it warp with all the collaging? When I first started painting I painted on leftover pieces of MDF, but they are so heavy to hang, so I switched to canvas. But it is nice that it is sturdy and can take quite a beating, which comes in handy in mixed media sometimes :-)
