Winter's on the way.

'November Beech Trees'

I have been living in the summer over the past couple of months, working on summer inspired pieces using photographs I took during the warmer months as my inspiration. This week  however I thought I would take a more seasonal approach and use some Gelli printed mulberry paper I made while the fallen leaves were still dry and crisp.

Autumn leaves

I collected  Autumn leaves and used acrylic paint to print them onto the paper with my Gelli plate.  I then used the paper to make an abstract woodland.
The trees were splatter painted with an old toothbrush after I blocked off the surrounding areas with masking tape. The copper red reminds me of the shiny glistening bark of the Beech tree. It seems to stand out so prominently when there is not much colour around, The background of collaged bookpaper text was going to be covered more heavily in gesso, but I like the way the text contrasts with the bark so I left it. I often feel I overwork things and my new challenge is to know when to leave things alone!

Collage obsession have a Haiku Theme this week so here is my woodland abstract with a little 5/7/5 Haiku.

  4. Thank you for your comments on my blog and the link to your post on Citrasolve. The videos by Cathy Taylor were really interesting I will have to try and get my hands on some National Geographic magazines and give it a try.
I love the results you have achieved using the autumn leaves in your printing.

  6. Lovely Haiku and it links beautifully with the abstract trees, very interesting and original. It's good to have a personal challenge, and 'knowing when to leave things alone' is certainly a challenge. There is such a lot to comment on and think about in this post, and I always like the way you describe your process. Because my Gelli plate is so new I would have been afraid of putting anything like a leaf (or perhaps a fern) on the plate - were the leaves still fairly fresh rather than dry? Enjoyed your post as always.

  10. Love the abstract trees, simplicity sometimes speaks more, bu like you I find it hard to leave it alone. I think it depends on what youare trying to say. Here simplicity is awesome. Your Haiku is wonderful.

  13. Wow--most gorgeous! I like the text coming through too. When you say "Gelli plate" do you mean a layer of gelatin? I actually made gelatin prints a couple weeks ago, and hadn't thought yet what I might do with them. Here's some inspiration! This is really really gorgeous!

  18. Really wonderful haiku collage. But I don't understand how you added the text? I want to make haiku art similar to this, but I haven't figured out how to add the text. My background is fine art but not calligraphy.
