falling stars on wild shores

Wild shores ( mixed media collage)

Last weeks post had an autumnal theme....
This week... well lets wind the clock back a few months to warmer days. We all have favourite seasons and Summer is mine. I dislike the cold and damp days of November and am constantly complaining of cold toes and fingers, so here is a little piece of Summer sunshine.

I finished this canvas a few weeks ago and hadn't got round to sorting through my photos till now to share with you how it was made.

It's not often that Scotland can look Mediterranean but on a day back in August it DID! ;)
I was driving along the coastal road marvelling at the sparkle of the deep azure sea when I noticed a carpet of wild Montbretia tumbling down to the sea.

In the UK it is a garden plant so I am not sure how it ended here!

I read that in the States the plant is known as Coppertips or falling stars... what a wonderfully descriptive name!
A cascade of golden orange blooms...

 The sea was collaged first

Then moving down the canvas more pieces of paper tumble down to the sea.

The distant hills of mainland Scotland are added.

along with liberal amounts of gesso

Purple foil and discarded sweet wrappers are added to the foreground to add sparkle.

And very last of all I add the montbretia blooms...
Made from hand printed mulberry papers

  4. This is truly wonderful. The colours, the textures, those flowers look so realistic. I just wonder how many chocolates you have to eat to get all the wrappers you seem to have stashed away.Lol!

  5. I have not heard of these flowers before, they are so beautiful. Your painting of them is delicate and cheerful. They seem to be dancing sweetly on the hillside. Your process is awesome and the way the colorful papers came out beneath your painting is your magic touch.

I love summer too, the warmth, the green, the laziness especially. Winter can be nice too. I started to embrace it more when I began walking in it. I just bundle up and enjoy the quiet outside.

  7. Lovely, Morag. It's just like seeing several different pieces. The collaged one is really beautiful as is, and then you add gesso creating another beauty. Paint and finishing touches transforms it into a brilliant piece of art. I feel lucky to see and read your process. Thanks for sharing!

  10. Very beautiful - it really does remind me of warm summer days - a lovely and cheery thought on this cold, damp November day! I love Montbretia, but this year we had hardly any flowers on it - I have no idea why, but I'm hoping they will return next summer - how lovely to find so many growing wild, what a stunning display.

  11. This is lovely Morag! I love seeing shots of works in progress, and how another artist reaches the final piece. Really love the textural finish and the effect the gesso has over the collage.

  18. Morag, I was mesmerized seeing how you put together this enormously gorgeous canvas. This is such a wonderful and warm piece to push away the winter blues. It is so cold here and so early in the winter that seeing this collage makes me feel warm inside.

  19. Thanks so much for sharing your process, I did not realize you did collage underneath. I guess that's what gives your paintings this marvelous three dimensionality. I loved summer too when I lived in UK but now I live on East Coast USA it is a bit like being trapped in an oven and I miss those drizzly English summers and BBQs that get rained out. Happy PPF

  23. Cant say enough about this! I love it! Did you simply use regular consistency gesso -undiluted, not colore, over the collage? Never thought of doing that but wow it looks great, very textured (well, that is gesso) yet not too busy on the eye.http://postcardsworldwide.blogspot.com/2014/11/golden-fall.html

  26. I feel magic in this piece. The photo of the coastline reminds me of the one I see on my drive home, half of the way around the world. I like to think of the connection between all of the waters of the world, between people who live in different lands but share a passion. Have a lovely week, Morag.
